RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Religious Education is at the centre of St Michael’s school curriculum and is taught daily both formally and informally. Teachers use the Bathurst Diocesan document To Know, Worship and Love to guide the teaching and learning of Religious Education. Catholic symbols are used throughout the school; staff, students and families participate in regular prayer and worship following the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. Year Three students prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Eucharist. Year Two students prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Year Six students prepare for and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Religious Education curriculum helps students to explore the values, ideals and challenges of the Gospel as embodied in the person of Jesus Christ.

ENGLISH

We are using the K-6 English Syllabus formulated by the Board of Studies. English is the key learning area where students develop knowledge, skills and understandings about the English language and literature. As well as being a key learning area in its own right, English also has a wider role as a means of learning in all key learning areas.

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is essential for living. Some aspects of mathematics are required by individuals in order to function adequately as members of society. These aspects include strategies and reasoning skills and techniques involved in number facts, computation and mathematical problem solving.

HUMAN SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT - HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY

Human Society and its Environment provides a knowledge base for students to gain understandings about change and continuity, cultures, environments and social systems and structures. Students will have opportunities to learn about people and the environments with which they interact. It is divided into two areas of History and Geography.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

This Syllabus is concerned with the teaching and learning of science and technology for the period of schooling from K to 6. This syllabus is the learning area in which all students learn about the natural and made environments by investigating, by designing and making and by using technology.

The diverse informal and formal learning in visual arts, music, drama and dance that young children bring to school influences their interest and development in the art forms and their readiness for further learning.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Our special needs program promotes differentiated learning experiences for targeted students in areas of literacy and numeracy; as well students with learning difficulties, language, behavior and gifted and talented needs.

Inclusive Education - “It’s about creating a school that meets the needs of all students.” (Ferguson, 1996)
